Keechant Sewel SIR (Staten Island Railway)

Her voice is currently associated with the **R211A, R211T, and R211S** fleets, with the **R211S being the version used on the Staten Island Railway (SIR)**. The R211A and R211T types are not compatible with SIR operation, so hearing Sewell on SIR specifically comes through the R211S fleet.
Sewell is certainly not new to New York's transit system, however. Before becoming an MTA announcement voice, she had a long career in law enforcement. She spent **25 years with the Nassau County Police Department**, serving in assignments including undercover work, school protection, hostage negotiations, the Major Case Bureau, the Professional Standards Bureau, and the federal terrorism task force. She ultimately became **Chief of Detectives**.
She then became the **45th Commissioner of the New York City Police Department**, serving from January 2022 through June 2023. During her time as commissioner, she was closely involved with subway safety and the relationship between the NYPD and the MTA. She also became associated with subway-safety messaging, including announcements concerning police presence and safety inside the system.
Her connection to transit continued after leaving the NYPD. In November 2023, Sewell joined the **New York Mets** as Senior Vice President for Security and Guest Experience, overseeing security and guest-experience responsibilities at Citi Field and other Mets facilities.
Now, her voice has found another unexpected home: **inside the subway and on Staten Island Railway trains themselves**. In addition to her R211 announcements, Sewell is heard in **police-in-station safety announcements** and in the MTA's **accessible-station announcements**, including accessibility messages referring to the system's 100+ and 150+ accessible stations.
For now, though, there is a natural limit to where railfans can expect to hear her. **Unless railfans and train lovers somehow get the opportunity to ask for a “codebreak”** — a custom or unusual announcement recorded outside the normal set of messages — Sewell's known recordings remain associated with her actual MTA assignments. A hypothetical codebreak could therefore be a particularly interesting find for the NYC transit community: hearing Sewell say a route, destination, or service combination that isn't part of her ordinary announcement library.
That makes Keechant Sewell a particularly unusual addition to the MTA's announcement roster. Her voice connects **R211A/R211T subway service, R211S service on SIR, police-safety announcements, and accessibility messaging**, while her previous career gives her an unusually direct connection to the very subway system whose riders now hear her voice.
